The supply line to the commode in a single-bath residence failed and leaked water to the interior of the home for an unknown period of time. The leak resulted in the extensive damage to the building interior as well as extensive mold growth. Investigations were targeted toward attempting to determine the approximate date that the leak began. |
| Scope: |
- Leak rate testing at the commode.
- Destructive testing to observe mold propagation within wall cavities.
- Moisture testing at regular vertical intervals to determine the extents of drywall damage.
- Fungal sampling of various surfaces to document mold types and concentrations.
- Evaluation of historical water use rates to attempt to identify anomalous usage patterns.
- Leak rate determined to be as high as 32 gallons per day.
- Evaluation of mold propagation (e.g., growth of mycelia and penetration of hyphae into substrates) suggested that the leak occurred within three weeks of investigations.
