Pollutant Storage TanksStorage Tank StatsThe Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that there are approximately 611,000 underground storage tanks (USTs) nationwide that store petroleum or other hazardous substances. These USTs do pose a great potential risk of leaking and contaminating the groundwater throughout the United States. This is an especially alarming threat here in Florida, where about 92 percent of our drinking water is groundwater. As this danger became realized, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection implemented one of the first petroleum cleanup rules in the nation in 1983. Since then, more than 23,000 discharges have been reported, of which 6122 have been assessd and closed, and 16,800 are still to be assessed and closed.
